The Amazon Basin

Before it was dessert, it was wild. The oldest traces of cacao were found in the upper Amazon. Chocolate is South American by birth.

1500 BC

Mesoamerica

Olmec, Maya and Aztec hands whip cacao into a bitter, sacred drink. The beans were so precious they were spent as currency.

1847

Bristol, England

Fry & Sons press the first chocolate made to be eaten, not sipped. The bar is born, and the world never recovers.
